Research topics

The main activities of the microwave frequencies team aim at developping passive microwave components that incorporate a thin film of magnetic materials such as ferrites. The global frequency range goes from 100 MHz to 100 GHz but most of them work at frequencies above 10 GHz.

By nature, some are non-reciprocal, that is they induce contrary effects according to the wave’s direction of propagation (e.g. isolators, circulators). Others are reciprocal (e.g. resonators, inductors). Each time, the ferrite film enhances the component or ameliorates its performance. In some cases, it permits the device to be frequency-tunable.

Many high frequency components (beyond gigahertz) are using the gyromagnetic properties of ferrties materials. In the area of resonance, the permeability has rapid variations which can lead to the following consequence :

  • magnetic anisotropy (with an anti-symetric tensor) that is the reason for non reciprocal effects and taht is used for components like isolators or circulators.
  • absorption peak which is maximal at the reonance frequency. This frequency band is used in device like resonators for filter devices and can also be found in some kinds of isolators.

Depending on the target components, either one of the following ferrite material is used: Yttrium Iron Garnet ‘YIG’ and M-phase Barium Hexaferrite ‘BaM’. The first suits for components working in the 1-10 GHz range and exhibits very selective losses. As for the second, it is hard-ferrite type and has a high remanent induction (resulting in possible auto-polarization) and a high anisotropy field (elevating the working frequency to more than 40 GHz). The polarization with a continuous magnetic field is often necessary in order to make the component work correctly. Changing the polarization field’s intensity allows to adjust the resonance frequency and makes the components tunable.

At the moment, Components under study are the following :

  • Isolators, that are 2-port, non-reciprocal components that enable forward wave propagation and disable reverse propagation. Main utilization is the decoupling of the source and the load in order to attenuate backward reflections.
  • Circulators, that are 3-port components and that separate signals according to their direction. For instance for single-antenna communication devices, they manage the propagation of signals from the antenna towards the reception circuit and from the emission circuit towards the antenna
  • Résonators, that are used complementary to traditionnal LC circuits for radiofrequencies applications. They have a greater quality factor. Main applications cover narrow-band filtering (bandpass or stop-band) and oscillators adapting circuits.
  • Micro planar inductors, that can be found in numerous applications (high frequency electronics, RF filters, power electronics, ...).

Last topics of interest for us is planar metamaterials. In the microwave domain, depositing arrays of conductive particles on substrate (using microelectronic techniques) is an alternative solution to high-permittivity materials processing or left-handed materials elaboration. Looking at it, considering the planar design of our magnetic components, we decided to explore this field. The major idea we assumed is that it seems interesting, particulary for the isolator, to confine wave propagation within the magnetic layer and thus to exploit the ferrite’s magnetic properties the best way.

All these studies need characterizations. Indeed, associated with each topic, we have developped microwave measurements techniques and in some case low frequency characterizations.
